Free At Last
Galatians 5:7-15
Grace is good.
Legalism is bad.
Facts about freedom…
- Freedom is required to be in God’s will.
Galatians 5:12-13
Freedom is a spiritual birthright. - Freedom is not without responsibility.
Galatians 5:13-14
Three responsibilities we have as a result of our freedom:- Responsibility to discipline ourselves.
If we are not to live under the control of the law (legalism) and a lack of self-control is to be avoided (license), then how do we live? Questions for self examination:- Am I more interested in demanding my rights than accepting my responsibilities? (The weaker brother)
- What is the wisest choice possible? (The opposite of “can I get away with this?”)
- Does this have the potential to move me towards sin?
- Am I willing to minimize my liberty in order to maximize my ministry?
- Responsibility to love one another.
Leviticus 19:18, Galatians 5:14, Matthew 22:36-40) - Responsibility to serve one another.
Galatians 5:13
What are you doing with your freedom?
- Responsibility to discipline ourselves.
- Freedom leads to unity.
Galatians 5:15
Legalism at its core will always choose uniformity over unity.
“Legalism requires that we all be alike, unified in convictions and uniform in appearance. Grace finds pleasure in differences, encourages individuality, smiles on variety, and leaves plenty of room for disagreements. Not until we put a stop to legalism and its desire to control will horizontal grace flourish in the body.” Chuck Swindoll, Grace Awakening
